Choosing The Correct Size
Selecting the right size bike is an important decision necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of the riding officer. Overall height is important, as is leg length, in determining the correct size of bike. However, the following simple rule of thumb is a useful starting point.
OVERALL HEIGHT BIKE SIZE
  • Less than 5’ 9" -- 16"
  • 5’ 9” to 6’   ------ 18"
  • 6’ to 6’ 2”   ------ 20"
  • Over 6’ 2”   ------ 22"
The second means of selecting the correct bike is to measure the 'stand over height' i.e. the distance between the crotch and ground. Then add at least one inch 'clearance' and preferably 2 to 3 inches if riding off-road. Using that measurement, the correct bike can be selected from the table below. The aim is to be able to straddle the bike with both feet flat on the ground wearing usual bike shoes with at least 1" 'clearance' between the crotch and the top bar (see below).
Smith & Wesson Size Chart
STAND OVER HEIGHT --- BIKE SIZE --- ACTUAL TOP BAR TO GROUND HEIGHT*
   Less than 32”      ---   16"      ---       30”
   32” to 34.5”           ---   18"      ---       31”
   34.5” to 36”           ---   20"      ---       32.5"
   Greater than 36” ---   22"      ---       34”

IMPORTANT
The above notes are for bike selection guidance only. Attention to other variables such as saddle height, handlebar, bar end positions etc. are just as important as bike selection to achieve a safe, comfortable and 'correct' riding position. The only reliable method of assessing the correct bike size is for the riders to try out the bike of choice for themselves.
